Bruce Roberts

Bruce Roberts

2008 - Sports Sector, Athlete Category

Bruce Robert’s parents moved to Châteauguay in 1969. At 13, as a student at Howard S. Billings High School, he was coached for the first time by Dale Munkittrick and Norman Woods who continued to coach him until 1975.

In 1976 he was a volunteer at the Olympic Games in Montréal, where he was assigned to the team working on the track and field events.

His passion and athletic abilities quickly took him to the international level. In 1978, he participated in his first 400 metre race in a competition between Canada and Italy.

He continued his training while studying engineering at universities in Wisconsin and Michigan, enabling him to develop in the prestigious competitive NCAA university system.

In 1980 he was selected as a member of the Canadian Olympic Team for the games in Moscow that were eventually boycotted by Canada.

Once he received his diploma, General Motors offered him a job that would enable him to reach his goal of participating in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Thanks to his understanding employer, he continued to train and qualified to make the Canadian National Team. He took part in the Olympic Games where he finished 32nd in the 800 metre race out of 71 competitors.

He still holds the Canadian record in the indoor 400 metres in the senior category.
