Bobby Dollas

Bobby Dollas

2011 - Sports Sector, Athlete Category

Bobby was 7 years old when his parents moved to Châteauguay, and he started to play organized hockey when he was 8. At a young age, Bobby knew what he wanted to do and that was to play hockey. He lived and breathed hockey by watching the Montréal Canadians as a child. Bobby started to play at a high level in Peewee when he was 11 or 12 years old, becoming a very strong player while playing for the Cougars and Howard S. Billings Bantam Team.

Bobby then played for the Lac-Saint-Louis Lions Midget AAA. He won the Air Canada cup as a first year player and never looked back. He then played for the Laval Voisins with captain Mario Lemieux in the QMJHL. As a junior, he was chosen to play for  the 1984/85 Canada World Junior Team in Helsinki Finland and won a gold medal. He was the only Canadian to be chosen for the first all-star team in Tournament.

The Winnipeg Jets drafted him in 1983 in the first round, 14th overall; the first defensemen picked his year of eligibility. He played over 328 games in the AHL/IHL where Bobby won the Eddie Shore Award as the best defenseman in the 1992-93 season. In the NHL, Bobby played 646 regular season games with 42 goals and 96 assists for 138 points and 47 playoff games with 9 different teams. This would be over 17 years, for Winnipeg, Québec, Detroit, Anaheim, Edmonton, Pittsburgh, Calgary, Ottawa and San Jose.

One of his greatest accomplishment was winning the 1995 World Championships in Milan Italy with other NHL players, representing his country and being recognized as a good solid defenseman by his peers.

He lives in Kirkland with Lucy, his partner for the past 7 years, who has been there through thick and thin. His kids are Selina, Kayra, Juliane and Josh along with his step kids, Bianca and Giuliano. He is grateful to his parents, Archie and Sonia, for always being there for support for the last 46 years of his life.
