Heavy rains of May 29, 2012 – Report

Wednesday, 30 May, 2012

In the wake of heavy rains that hit the southwestern part of Québec and the Châteauguay area, it is the time to take stock.

Over 60 mm of rain, 40 mm in less than thirty minutes, fell on Châteauguay late in the afternoon of May 29, 2012. This rainfall, in that short period of time, caused back-ups that flooded several basements.

Made aware of the situation, emergency and municipal services staff – Police, Fire, Public Works, Environmental Health – has worked to minimize the impact of this significant rainfall.

In the coming days and weeks, the City will analyze the circumstances that led to the flooding.

"I have met people affected from all areas of the municipality and I want to reassure people of our support," said the mayor of Châteauguay Nathalie Simon.

The City of Châteauguay wishes to remind its citizens that the first thing to do when disaster strikes is to contact your insurer.
