From a Heat Island to a Cool Area: Start of Work

Thursday, 31 May, 2012
Work intended to create a cool spot is underway along the Fortunat-Crépin building in the Youville district (8).
Evaluated at $600,000, part of the work is funded by the ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux du Québec ($293,393). To qualify for the grant, the City had to target an area dubbed a « heat island » in a disadvantaged neighbourhood, based on criteria stipulated by the MSSS.
Work to be done in this area includes the reconfiguration of the street, setting up private access with parking for the Rendez-vous community centre, the reduction of paved surfaces, the greening of a shaded refreshing area with a gazebo; the greening of the walls of buildings, installation of bike racks, the setting up of a petanque (boccie) court and shuffleboard.
“This cool island will improve the quality of life in the neighbourhood, especially during heat waves,” said the mayor of Châteauguay Nathalie Simon.
The work on Brault Street, between Desrochers Est and D’Youville Boulevard, started on May 24, 2012 and will continue until July 20, 2012. Traffic will continue to flow in the area, but expect some delays during this period.
