Special measures for the extreme heat

Thursday, 9 July, 2020

In light of the ongoing heat wave and the extreme heat warning issued by the Direction de santé publique de la Montérégie and still in effect, Ville de Châteauguay wants to pass along some advice to the public to help tolerate the heat:

-  Drink regularly, without waiting to feel thirsty.

-  Reduce physical effort as much as possible.

-  Spend a few hours each day in a cool or air-conditioned place.

-  Take a cool shower or bath as often as necessary or cool yourself off with a damp towel.

-  Stay in contact with friends or family or get a relative or friend to check regularly on your state of health and even come to check the temperature in your home during a heat wave.

-  If you feel unwell, do not hesitate to contact the Info-Santé service by dialling 811.

Measures for day camps

During periods of extreme heat, a number of measures can be taken for the safety of the children and the monitors. These include:

-  Drink every 20 minutes, even if you do not feel thirsty. For children under 12, this should be about 1/3 to 1/2 a cup of water each time.

-  Choose water if possible. Children may also drink juice or a diluted sports drink.

-  Avoid energy drinks and drinks that contain caffeine (tea, coffee, etc.).

Extended hours for water parks

Exceptionally, the following water parks will remain in operation until 10 p.m. until further notice:

•  Parc Josaphat-Pitre (rue Albert and rue de Nicolet)

•  Parc Marcel-Seers (boulevard D’Youville and rue Girouard)

•  Parc Yvan-Franco (boulevard De Gaulle and rue Desmarais)

Centre sportif Polydium and outdoor aquatic complex

In addition to the water parks, residents are also invited to go to the Centre sportif Polydium (111, boulevard Maple) and to check the centre’s programming at polydium.com. The Beauharnois aquatic complex (864, boulevard Cadieux) is also open for visitors and a special rate has been granted to Châteauguay residents. More details can be found at beauchateau.ca/eng/installation/outdoor-aquatic-complex

Watering ban maintained

Due to the high temperatures forecast for the coming days, the notice banning watering has been extended for the entire weekend. Then the situation will be reassessed based on precipitation that has fallen and the level of our drinking water reserves. Until then, the other municipalities served by our drinking water distribution system — Mercier, Léry, Sainte-Martine, Saint-Isidore and Saint-Urban-Premier — are strongly urged to maintain or adopt the same restrictions.
