Tax freeze for the year 2018

Tuesday, 12 December, 2017

Châteauguay, December 12, 2017 – The new municipal council has adopted the 2018 budget of the City of Châteauguay on Monday, December 11, with no tax increase for citizens. This rigorous work exercise, considering the incompressible expenses of the municipality, causes that the owners of a median home value ($241,245) will have to pay, in municipal taxes, the same amount in 2018 as for 2017.

Controlling expenses

The City's 2018 budget remains unchanged from last year, at $ 92 million. "For this first fiscal year, we hoped to freeze the average residential tax bill. All City departments put their shoulder to the wheel, and we arrived at a very satisfactory result, given the limited time available since the election of November 5th" said Pierre-Paul Routhier, Mayor of Chateauguay. "We already started the work for the 2019 budget. All expenses will be duly examined and the council will determine their relevance for future years."

Pricing and Quotas

For waste and recycling collection services, homeowners will benefit from lower rates ($9 and $12 per household, respectively), while recycling and treatment of drinking water are subject to a slight increase ($1 and $6). The City had to rebalance the residential tax rate to compensate for lower rates.

In summary, the majority of residents (66%) will benefit from a slight decrease in overall pricing, and 34% will experience a slight increase (less than 1%). Owners of commercial and industrial buildings will benefit from a tax rate identical to the one for 2017.

This budget also takes into account the additional quotas that Chateauguay must pay to various regional authorities, including the Réseau de transport métropolitain (RTM), the Municipalité régionale de comté (MRC) and the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal (CMM).

Strict management of public finances

The new municipal council announced the establishment of a reengineering committee composed of elected officials, employees and citizens, whose mandate will be to review programs and processes to ensure optimal management, and to provide financial leeway.
