Launch of the “SEXTING, is PORN!” Campaign

Wednesday, 24 January, 2018

Châteauguay, January 24, 2018 – The Service de police de Châteauguay launches an awareness-raising campaign on the emerging sexting phenomenon. With the theme “SEXTING, is PORN!,” this campaign targets young people aged 12 to 17 in a school setting and will continue until the beginning of February. The main goal is to educate, raise awareness and help teenagers cope with this problem.

A sex message is a sexual, erotic, pornographic or intimate message, with or without a photo. It may be sent by text message or a messaging application on a social network or other. The sexting phenomenon is trivialized by young people and growing. Since 2016, the police force has handled no less than 30 child pornography cases.

The campaign will be visible in six high schools in the area served by the police force, namely Collège Héritage de Châteauguay, Gabrielle-Roy, Howard S. Billings, Louis-Philippe-Paré, Marguerite-Bourgeois and Patriotes-de-Beauharnois. In total, it is estimated that nearly 5,000 students—not to mention their parents—will be affected by the campaign. This is made possible through a partnership between the Service de police de Châteauguay, the Commission scolaire des Grandes-Seigneuries, the Commission scolaire de la Vallée-des-Tisserands, the New Frontier School Board, Collège Héritage and the social workers at CALACS, a Quebec coalition of sexual assault centres.

Steps in the campaign

In the next two weeks, parents will receive a letter from their child’s school about the campaign. Inside the school, a number of posters will be displayed on the walls. Each school will be visited by officers from the socio-community section of the Service de police de Châteauguay, assisted by young people and school staff, as well as CALACS social workers. They will be available to meet with the students in complete confidentiality if they so wish.

A catchy image

The image (posters and cell phone format cards) was designed for young people to illustrate the possible impacts of sending sex messages. With the advent of social networks, there is a risk that sex messages will be shared very rapidly among many contacts. If such a situation arrives, it is crucial to talk about it. With the resources available to them, adolescents are encouraged not to deal with this type of situation alone. The Service de police de Châteauguay takes this opportunity to remind citizens that the production, possession or distribution of child pornography and the non-consensual publication of intimate images are crimes.
