Police presence in schools : Raising awareness to better prevent

Wednesday, 30 August, 2017

Châteauguay, August 22, 2017 – At the beginning of the school year, the Service de police de Châteauguay takes the opportunity to remind citizens its role in schools.

Since 2005, police officers have been present in primary ans secondary schools in the region and act as contacts for prevention, community relations and youth interventions.

Since last year, community relations officers are the ones who visit schools. When required, they are supported by their patrol and investigator colleagues. Their role is mainly to:

  • Establish relations with young people.
  • Make presentations on various topics (cybercrime, intimidation, responsible driving, dating violence…).
  • Establish close and lasting relationships with schools and visit them regularly.
  • Identify problems and concerns that affect school life (intimidation, cybercrime, violence…)
  • Support their colleagues (officers and investigators) during school interventions.
  • Establish, when necessary, targeted action and intervention plans to counter certain problems.
  • Inform, support, and advise pupils and school staff on topics related to the justice system and the application of laws and by-laws.

This partnership is very important for the community and its positive impact on the school environment has become obvious over the years.
