Thomas Christie: Presbyterian pioneer in a Trinidad mission field

Thomas Christie: Presbyterian pioneer in a Trinidad mission field by Ronald Maha

Ronald Mahabir

Ronald Mahabir, a native of Trinidad, West Indies, moved to Canada in 1960 where he taught in a high school and in elementary schools. He was also involved in several community groups in Châteauguay where he now resides with his wife Gemma.

In this book, Mr. Mahabir portrayed the life and ministry of Rev. Thomas Christie, a Canadian Presbyterian missionary, posted in the Couva Ward, County of Caroni (Trinidad) in 1874. During the nine years he spent there working as a school administrator, he contributed to train teachers in pedagogy, preached to East Indians, white Presbyterians and emancipated Blacks and contributed to build a church. Mr. Mahabir also portrayed the history of Trinidad at that time, the racial relations between the different communities and the life conditions of workers on sugar cane plantations.
