Public Square in Front of Saint-Joachim: Let’s Hear Your Ideas!

On the information evening on October 23, the Ville de Châteauguay officially launched a public consultation process concerning the future public square in front of Saint-Joachim church (1 D’Youville Blvd.) to gather residents’ design ideas for this space.

Remember that the City first presented a preliminary sketch of a public square concept combining modernity and heritage last summer. The invitation is now extended to members of the public to suggest design ideas that will enhance this space and make it a pleasant place to visit and bring people together.

Nearly 80 residents attended this event last night. The broad lines of the project were explained to them and the participants had the opportunity to ask questions about the consultation process. The project outcome is not yet known because the objective of the consultations is in fact to involve people in designing the public square.

Suggestion boxes and a brainstorming session

The process will take place in two steps. From October 23 to November 27, suggestion boxes will be placed around the municipality to allow interested people to complete a short survey about what they would like to see or experience in this new space. The suggestion boxes will be located at the following places:

  • Hôtel de ville (5 D’Youville Blvd.)
  • Centre culturel G.-P.-Vanier (15 Maple Blvd.)
  • Pavillon de l’île (480, D’Youville Blvd.)
  • Église Saint-Joachim (1 D’Youville Blvd.)
  • Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste-Marie-Vianney (8 Rainville St.)
  • Centre écologique Fernand-Seguin (257 Fernand-Seguin St.)
  • Bibliothèque Raymond-Laberge (25 Maple Blvd.)

The survey is on the website at www.ville.chateauguay.qc.ca/en/place-publique. Respondents can also send photos or images of other inspiring spaces.

Citizens, churchgoers, local artists and other stakeholders interested in the development of the site are invited to attend the brainstorming evening scheduled Wednesday, November 27, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, at the Pavillon de l’île (480 D’Youville Blvd.). Anyone interested in participating in this evening can reserve by calling 450 698-3016 or by sending an email to communications@ville.chateauguay.qc.ca. Hosted by Conscience urbaine, round tables will allow participants to exchange ideas about different themes, such as mobility, the environment, planning, culture, economic development and landscape enhancement. It will be an opportunity to define the main directions which the team will use to prepare a report. The report results will be published in spring 2020.

This project was initiated by the Ville de Châteauguay, but it is also made possible through the co-operation of the Saint-Joachim parish. A fountain in the river? A bicycle path? A public market or viewing stands for outdoor shows? Take the opportunity to make your voice heard and contribute to this inspiring and unifying project, which will allow the entire community to enjoy a place that showcases an historic monument and revitalizes the area!
