Municipal court

Given the current situation related to the coronavirus pandemic, the City must, in a preventive approach, order several measures to protect both the public and municipal personnel against the possible spread of COVID-19. The City intends to prioritize online or telephone services. The Court’s service counter will therefore be closed to the public.

It is possoble to make regular payments by certified cheque or money order payable to "Ville de Châteauguay".   

Suspended driver's licence 

If your licence is suspended and you would like to pay the full amount owing in order to lift the suspension at the Société d’assurance automobile du Québec SAAQ), you can call the Municipal Court and make a credit card payment by calling 450 698-3244. Upon receipt of the payment, a notice will be sent to the SAAQ and the penalty will be lifted. Please check with the SAAQ that the penalty has indeed been lifted before starting to drive again.

Arrest warrant

With regard to persons who have signed a promise to appear before the fine collector following the execution of an arrest warrant or who have received an offer of compensatory work, please do not come to Court on March 30, 2020, despite what is written on the document you signed or that you received. Instead, please call the Municipal Court at 450 698-3243 between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm.

Court sessions

Court sessions are maintained for criminal cases.  The accused person does not have to attend as long as he or she is represented by a lawyer.  If you are a person charged with a criminal offence and do not have a lawyer, it is recommended that you :

  • Hire a lawyer

The hearings will be held in camera.  If you are returning from abroad or have symptoms of VIDOC-19, you will be denied access to the courtroom.

For all urgent requests, you can call 450 698-3246.  The Judge will be informed and will determine if a session must be held.

All criminal files (statements of offence) with hearing dates in March, April and May will be postponed to a later date.  Please do not attend. We will send you a notice of hearing informing you of the new date.  

Contestation (plea of not guilty)

If you wish to plead not guilty, you must complete and send us the response form included in the statement of offence. You will also find a self-addressed envelope for this purpose.

If you no longer have the reply form, the envelope or both, you can send us a simple letter indicating that you wish to plead not guilty and include your name, contact information and the statement of offence number that is located at the top centre of the statement of offence.

Municipal court jurisdiction

The Chateauguay Municipal Court district is governed by the Law on municipal courts. It is a tribunal accessible to citizens that offers an efficient justice system that is close at hand.  It has jurisdiction over the territories of Chateauguay, Léry, Beauharnois and Saint-Isidore. The municipal court has cognizance in the municipalities it serves in civil, criminal and penal matters.

The court hears cases on the following subjects:

  • Infractions of municipal bylaws in the cities and towns it serves regarding, notably:
    • parking and traffic
    • fire prevention
    • zoning
    • building maintenance
    • public health and cleanliness
    • orderliness, keeping the peace and public tranquility, etc.
  • Infractions of Quebec provincial laws including, notably:
    • the road safety Code
    • the Law governing off-road vehicles
    • the Law governing heavy goods vehicles
    • the Law governing tobacco, etc.
  • The municipality's claims in accordance with the Quebec Civil Code regarding:
    • municipal taxes
    • tariff bylaws of the municipalities served
  • Legal proceedings in accordance with section XXVII of the Criminal Code

The Municipal Court generally is in session on Tuesday and/or Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. It is presided over by a judge named by the Quebec Justice Ministry. 

How to change your address

If you have an active file at the Municipal Court of Châteauguay, please keep us informed of any change of address or telephone number that allows us to contact you at all stages of your file.  A change of address at the SAAQ is not enough given that we are two separate organizations.  Otherwise, you may not receive significant correspondence and may face additional legal and/or financial consequences.  To change your address, you can complete the "Avis de changement d'adresse (bilingual)" form and return it to us at or by fax at 450.698.3259
