Conversion of intergenerational dwellings

Conversion of intergenerational dwellings into two-family dwellings (duplexes)

Since 2004, Ville de Châteauguay has permitted additional housing units to be added to existing single-family dwellings to transform them into intergenerational housing, thereby allowing persons who are closely related to the occupant of the main building to occupy the additional housing unit. Currently, such a unit can be occupied solely for this reason.

The City is currently considering a by-law making it possible to convert an intergenerational dwelling into a two-family dwelling (duplex). This by-law would allow owners to keep the additional housing unit without requiring a close family relationship between the occupants of the two units, so the dwelling could be occupied by more than one family. A survey was recently conducted on the subject and the results will be known shortly.
