Costs of Service de police de Châteauguay : Châteauguay and Mercier Will Not Appeal Judgment

Thursday, 27 June, 2019

Châteauguay, June 27, 2019 – After reading the Superior Court judgment of June 10, 2019, Châteauguay Mayor Pierre-Paul Routhier and Mercier Mayor Lise Michaud have jointly announced that they will not appeal the decision.

“We are disappointed with the judge’s conclusions, but we have decided not to appeal to avoid any additional legal expenses. We can also look collectively toward the future and continue to benefit from a neighbourhood police force, while maintaining control over spending,” commented Mercier Mayor Lise Michaud.

Châteauguay Mayor Pierre-Paul Routhier considered that the situation should never have escalated in this way. “I would never have allowed such a situation to develop. We would certainly have been much clearer about the financial terms applicable during the negotiation period. We cannot change the past, but we are very happy to turn the page about this episode that disrupted relations between our two municipalities,” he explained.

Over the next few weeks, the Ville de Mercier will pay the Ville de Châteauguay an amount of $1,839,695 out of its coffers. The balance will be financed through a borrowing by-law of $2,000,000, which will be repaid over 10 years using the existing budgetary flexibility. “There will there be no impact on citizens’ tax bills,” confirmed Lise Michaud.
