A 100-year old member of the Royal Canadian Legion | The Involvement of Veterans Is Highlighted

Tuesday, 19 November, 2019

Châteauguay, November 19, 2019 – At the beginning of the City Council session yesterday, Châteauguay Mayor Pierre-Paul Routhier highlighted the presence of members from Royal Canadian Legion Châteauguay Branch 108 one week after the Remembrance Day celebrations commemorating the signing of the World War I armistice on November 11, 1918.

This visit was also the opportunity to highlight the recent birthday of a legion member, Garnet Bourgaize. On October 18, Mr. Bourgaize celebrated his 100th birthday.

“Being a veteran is impressive, but being 100 years old is just as impressive. Moreover, working for so many years to perpetuate the memory of citizens who sacrificed so much for liberty is exceptional,” said the Mayor of Châteauguay, Pierre-Paul Routhier.

Born in Gaspé, Mr. Bourgaize served for five years during World War II from 1940 to 1945. A combat engineer who was posted to several different countries (France, England and Italy), Mr. Bourgaize never lost his tenacity, despite an injury that shortened one of his missions.

Continuing his career in engineering when he returned to civilian life, Mr. Bourgaize has been involved in Royal Canadian Legion Châteauguay Branch 108 for 55 years. Known for his kindness and sharp wit, he continues to tour schools and public places, especially in November each year. During these tours, Mr. Bourgaize talks to people about the main reasons why it is important to remember the horrors of war and to participate in the poppy campaign—a way to remember.

Mr. Bourgaize signed the Ville de Châteauguay’s golden book and all the members of the Canadian Legion were warmly thanked for their invaluable contribution to building a free and peaceful society.
