2020 Budget : The Mayor of Châteauguay explanations in a video

Thursday, 19 December, 2019

Châteauguay, December 18, 2019 – After a rigorous budget exercise, the Municipal Council presented and adopted the Ville de Châteauguay’s budget for 2020 on December 9. Given the complexity of this exercise, the Mayor of Châteauguay has prepared a video explaining the various points to consider when you receive your 2020 tax bill.

A balanced budget

The City’s budget provides for expenses of $100M and revenues of an equivalent amount with no deficit. For 2019, expenses were budgeted at $96M.

A new assessment roll and its impact on the tax bill

As prescribed by the law, a new assessment roll was filed in September and will come into force on January 1, 2020. The values recorded reflect market conditions as at July 1, 2018, and serve as a basis for the calculation of municipal taxes for the years 2020 and 2021.

With this new roll, the average increase is 6.42%. Your property value may have increased or decreased much more than this average without any involvement by the municipal administration.

The City’s total tax revenues will increase 2% in 2020.

Variation in rates

In addition to taxes, the City charges every property, regardless of value, for services such as drinking water and wastewater treatment. The MRC, which manages waste collection, charges each property for garbage collection, recycling and organic waste collection. Lastly, the Ville de Châteauguay’s administration of Régie BeauChateau (Sportplex and outdoor pool) is also charged to each property.

Rates are explained below.

  •   $253, drinking water + $16
  •   $322, wastewater treatment + $11
  •   $106, garbage - $23
  •  $60, collection of organic matter +$43
  •  $77, recycling + $13
  •  $87, Régie Sports et loisirs Beau-Château + $49

Total costs for services amount to $905 per property or an increase of $109 compared with 2019.
